The photograph is the least interesting part.

Anyone can show you a finished canopy. What decided this one was a choice between adding columns and changing the steel — and the reasoning behind that choice is the case study.

ZIL Shades is a young company. What follows is separated into what the company has delivered and what its partners delivered before it existed. We would rather be exact about that than let a reader assume.

The company’s own first project — a motorised awning in Abu Dhabi — is published in full, including the part of it that went wrong.

All projects

Published in full, or not published.

Each entry carries the same fields: what was found, what was decided, what changed and what it cost the client in disruption. A project with no decision worth explaining does not become a case study.

Two of these are real, documented projects and lead to the full case study. The third is shown as the structure a record will take. No client name, image or figure is published until the work is documented and cleared.

The format

What every case study has to answer.

01

What we found

The inspection, the condition, the drawings, and the constraint that was not written in the brief.

02

What was decided

The options, the one chosen, and the reasoning — including what the rejected option would have cost.

03

What changed

Sections, materials, finishes and calculations, set against what was there before.

04

What it cost in disruption

Programme, access, noise, closures. The number clients remember long after the invoice.

05

What happens next

Inspection interval, maintenance schedule and the asset record — because the project is not the end of it.

Next step

Most projects begin with a structure someone is worried about.
